Happy thought for June ’12

Life in the summer is wonderful in so many ways. But for sure, food is a major joy and thus my happy thought for this June is one food specifically.

You might be surprised but this post is to sing the praise of: new potatoes.

Every year we wait anxiously the arrival of these lovely little things. The skin is so thin that when you wash and scrub, the skin comes off. It is some work to wash a kettle full since they truly are really small especially early in the season. But even that plays to their special status. Something truly wonderful should take some effort, right?

Lazy Sundays

Lazy Sundays are one of the things that make my summer. Last Sunday was a perfect specimen of that kind. I opened up the gazebo right in the morning. I love sitting in there and admiring the garden. And since this weekend was the apple blossom weekend, that just made the views extra special.

I think lazy is a wonderful. I believe in rewarding myself with time to just sit, relax and enjoy the summer in the garden. I take my Country Homes and Interiors magazines with me and jump into finding inspirational ideas – both big and small.

I love Apple Blossoms

P1110307Every year I wait for the apple trees to don their beautiful gowns in May. I hope for a beautiful weather since that will allow me to enjoy the blossoms longer.

This year after a cold start to the spring we have enjoyed a warm week. And suddenly: They are here.

First only a hint of white starts to show between the new leaves. The, as the sun dances around the branches of the trees, the buds start to grow bigger. But still, they are withdrawn, wrapping their petals tight, as if questioning – can we really start blooming now?

Getting into the light

After a green Xmas we had the winter wonderland in January. And it went on and on. February, March – even topped with a huge blizzard in April of all months! So, I officially think winter has changed its place. Surprisingly this year the light of the spring did not wake me from my winter hibernation, since the snow was all the proof I needed that the winter was still dominant here. So I gave in to my feelings and kept on dozing off, not doing much anything.

But, now, finally here I am! My dear reader I wish to Thank You so much for returning to read my blog even though there has not been much to see lately.

Charity of the month

This November I renewed my subscription for a magazine supporting the handicapped. The organization is targeting young children and making sure they have enough support personnel when the kids with special needs go to school. That felt like a very good cause to keep supporting. How did you help this month?

“What do I wish for Xmas? Enough helping hands for each and every kid who needs them.”

Charity of the month

This October our charity of the month went to animals.

The local Junior High participates each year in the Operation Day Work charity event. The kids can choose from getting a place to work for themselves or attending a school day. Many parents employ their children with household light work and so did we also this year. Jr. spent the day in our garden taking care of the mountain of leaves trying to take over our garden.

The Operation Work Day is a long standing tradition in Finland. This charity idea first started in Sweden, early 1960’s, in honor of Dag Hammaskjöld as Swedish students wanted to honor his work for peace and for the international community. Soon the charity came to Finland also. Ever since the mid 90’s the Operation Word Day has been an annual happening in most of Finnish schools. The minimum required payment is just EUR 10.

Fall falls over me

Now, for a lady fully confessed as a summer lover, I am having a mysterious connection to Fall.

It is totally different than my full hearted infatuation with summer. This is something totally different. There is no “oh, I wish I could get out of the door faster to enjoy the warmth”. There is no “oh, that rain really brought a wonderful fresh smell”. No, there is “I wish I can get to my car fast enough to avoid as much of this storm as possible”. There is “I cannot believe I have to scrape the windows off my car already today”. But there is also “oh, those trees look absolutely amazing in the sunshine, super yellow!”.

Happy thought for October 2011

This happy thought actually started already in September but since I have been a bit slow in posting my happiness to the world it counts for October now. My happy thought for this October is – College Football! Go Bucks!

I really really love watching American Football. Since we have ESPN America on our cable I cannot get enough of the gamedays. In order to keep family life going I cannot use all of my Saturdays and Sundays in front of the TV watching football, so I tape the games and watch them at intervals during the week. This gives me the possibility to skip slow parts faster and catch some well deserved rest after a hard workday.

My new friend Bella

As a kid I used to bike as soon as the weather would permit for as long as it was possible till winter came. Back then if I had to get to a hobby I either biked or walked. Which was quite ok, since the getting to the gymnastics practice was part of building a better physic also. Nowadays my kids bike to hobbies but especially during winter we take them when possible, which at some point makes the week feel like a constant battle to remember which time I need to be available each day.

I did not own a car when we had Ms. Teen. When I went to work I would first bike to the opposite direction with Ms. Teen (who of course back then was not teen yet) and both our bags. After dropping her off I would ride my bike to my office. When we had Jr., I said enough is enough. There is no way I will transport the three of us AND our bags on a bike. So we bought me my first own car. It was a red Suzuki Alto which served me well until I put my foot down hard up the road from our house and the Alto said “screech” and then never said anything anymore. I then upgraded to a Nissan Micra (black) then was handed down our Ford Escort STW (white) which I drove until the guy helping to batch it up each year asked Mr. Tee not to bring it by anymore. So I now have my most expensive car to date, a used Peugeot 106 (red). With the parade of all the cars ended my biking days. I was surprised to realize that 10 years had gone by without me riding a bike.

My Happy Thought for June 2011

My garden.  That is my Happy Thought for this June.

I am not much of a gardener but what little I can and do I enjoy so much. Especially now that summer has just started I am still all full of juice for gardening. I bought a mini greenhouse and am currently pre-growing sweet pea and sunflowers.

Of course this year the greenhouse did its job well in May but little did I know that summer would start in beginning of June with a real heat wave. Still, I think the greenhouse is a lovely addition to my garden. Once all this pre-growing is done (any day I just take the time to plant this little things) I will fill it with summer flowers in pots.
